Situated on a steep and rocky hillside with views to the Columbia River Gorge and Mosier Plateau, this home was designed to reflect its surroundings. Encompassed by rock formations and spectacular views, the homes plan mimics the sharp edges and terrain while situated for every space to boast it’s own dramatic views. Picturesque views to the river gorge, plateau, or surrounding mountains and countryside, the vast window openings bring them all into the house on all elevations. The large protruding cantilevers help emulate the surrounding terrain while giving the user a feeling that they themselves too are overhanging the cliffs while occupying the home. Taking advantage of the sloping lot, the structure has a modest one story entry at the street with a transparent two story façade in the back overlooking the river gorge. At just over 2,000 SF, this 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house also contains a lower level accessory dwelling unit for long term guests or additional rental income.

What the existing house lacked in efficiency, it certainly made up for in it’s amazing views overlooking Haystack Rock and the Pacific Ocean. Originally thought to be a possible tear down when purchased, we came together with Clarkbuilt, Inc. as a design/build team to save this home and improve it in every which way we could. By completely reconfiguring the entry and vertical circulation locations, moving the kitchen to the main level, and adding 12’ to the back of the house really let the home breathe with an open great room on the main level and bedrooms overlooking the ocean below.

The existing home was an old farmhouse for a plum farm that was once located in West Cully built in the 1940’s. Due to its history, it was decided the original form of the home would be preserved as much as possible. The massing of this residence provided great opportunities with it’s steep roof to allow for a 2 story addition without increasing the overall building height of the existing home. By slamming an open modern wooden box through the entire structure, half of the home was able to become two stories, and the other half a vaulted great room that peaks at 20’ in height! A true rarity one gets in an urban location of a home of this size. The new home being fully insulated and sealed uses 25% of the energy of comparable homes while respecting the existing streetscape of the neighborhood. In less than 1000SF this home provides all of the modern amenities of a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom house in less than half of the building area and lot size of a standard Portland home.

The existing farm property had a huge horse arena that was no longer in use. The owners came to Sasquatch Architecture with a need to bring it back to life as a multi-use venue. Infilling the existing walls with local Doug Fir siding and a new roof, one has no idea that this was once an open air dilapidated structure. Taking advantage of the vast existing steel frames on the interior, these were refinished and left exposed to contrast the new wood ceiling. A loft was added for a dramatic wedding entry and additional event space while housing a full kitchen and secondary program below. Boasting views to the surrounding hills, openness and transparency to the exterior provided this modest structure to be an indoor/outdoor space used to host events throughout the entire year.

At only 345 SF, this ADU doubles as an office by day and studio by night. Locating the ADU in the NE corner of the lot, this maximized the homes rear yard space while providing ample solar gains and daylighting to the south and west facades. The large roof overhang reduces any glare to provide the users at their desks with uninterrupted views to Mt. Hood. Using the entire north wall for storage and a murphy bed, this office can be transformed to a guest studio in matter of seconds.

Located in the heart of the beautiful Historic Irvington neighborhood, the clients needed to expand their kitchen without competing with it’s existing beauty. Having to go through a local historic review, the neighborhood commission came together and agreed this addition not only was designed to seamlessly match the existing details of the home but enhanced it’s already great nature. Adding a sun filled breakfast nook and continuing the existing kitchen into the addition, this addition provides the user with useful space throughout the entire day inside the home. A new courtyard and covered patio were also a part of this project for the owners to enjoy with easy access from the addition throughout all four seasons.
